Why I'm running

Dear Friends,

When my son was diagnosed with autism at age 4, I would kneel at his bedside and promise him I would do everything in my power to find out what happened to him, to never quit working to return him to health, and to stop this from happening to other children. I’ve spent the last 13 years pursuing these goals going door to door in the halls of Congress. While there, I witnessed government agencies that plod along with little sense of urgency, existing on never ending funding entitlements. I want to change that, and bring my decade old promise all the way to the floor of Congress.

I believe that without sensible leaders, a nation is in trouble. I pledge to lead with integrity, serve with humility, and use the influence of office to speak up for those that have no influence. I have a proven track record of turning ideas into laws. I do not believe that spending, increased taxation and government intervention is the answer to our economic woes. We cannot spend our way to prosperity. In the health arena and elsewhere, members of Congress all too often do not hold accountable those entrusted with federal funding. The answer is not more indiscriminate and unsecured funding in the hope that the sheer volume of investment produces a result or two. It’s up to the members of Congress to listen to their constituents, prioritize on their behalf, and drive focus on goals and deliverables. As your U.S. Representative, I pledge to pursue answers to our nation’s toughest issues and insist on accountability every day I’m there.

Thank you so much for becoming a Friend of Elizabeth Emken for Congress 2010.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth
